Dear Parents and Children,
This term we have some exciting learning planned for our theme on “Castles” and our key question is ‘Would you want to be a knight?’
The children will be learning all about what it was like to live in a castle in the past and be encouraged to ask questions, using why, when, how and where to develop learning, this will be achieved through non-fiction books and the internet.
Our outside role play area will be transformed into a castle and the children will have the opportunity to design and make swords, armour, shields and other related resources to support their role play. You may even see a real life Princess as she prepares for a ball, in her dressing room, later in the term!
If you have any castle related toys or books we could borrow we would really appreciate it and we promise to take very good care of them.
We will be reading many traditional stories and by acting these out in the role play areas the children will become really familiar with the stories.
This term we have PH Sports for PE on a Monday afternoon and Yoga/Games on a Thursday afternoon, so please make sure your child comes to school dressed in their PE kit on these days. We also have Forest School on a Wednesday afternoon. If you are able to help one week, please let me or the office know.
As usual Homelearning tasks are presented in a grid that last for the entire term. So please choose two or three each fortnight to complete. Dates for returning are on the grid.Y1 spellings will continue to be given out at the beginning of each week, normally a Monday, and tested the following Monday.Please make sure you practise your spellings regularly, a few minutes every day is most beneficial. Please also continue to read your reading book every night or over a couple of nights if requested, and then return to school to be changed.YR reading words will once again be sent home every few weeks when the children have learnt the tricky words in class. Please do practice these with your child when you hear them read.We really encourage you to read with or to your child every evening if possible. We understand that there will be occasions where this will not be possible, but reading is fundamentally important to every aspect of the curriculum. It improves spelling, widens your vocabulary and promotes creativity in writing.In class, we keep a record of how often you read at home and when you have read 25/50/75 times etc, you will receive a certificate and a reward from our special box! Please make sure you sign the reading record so we know you have read and place your reading book back in your book bag. We aim to change reading books at least 3 times a week, but sometimes we are just too busy and run out of time!In addition to listening to your child read, it is really important that you read to your child. Bedtime stories are a wonderful opportunity for this. We welcome parent helpers who would be willing to come in each week to listen to the children read, or help in any other way.
