Literacy lies at the heart of the curriculum. At Urchfont, priority is given to ensuring each child has the opportunity to develop and succeed in this critical subject. Lessons are focussed on reading, writing and speaking and listening. We try to deliver lessons where children see that their learning has a purpose and therefore we try as much as possible to link it to other subjects in a themed approach. However, other lessons are planned to teach a discrete skill and both are highly important.
At Urchfont, we recognise that children need the opportunity to read widely and often. We teach children to read using a variety of methods and have daily phonics lessons for children in Key Stage 1. Reading material, for use in the classroom, as well as at home, is carefully monitored, updated and replenished when necessary. Reading at home is particularly encouraged and children take a book home to read every night.
We use Letters and Sounds programme of work to teach Phonics to our children in Key Stage 1. They are taught daily in small focussed groups. We are proud of the school's results in phonics as this is key to early Literacy skills.
In Key Stage 2, the children then move onto a whole school spelling gprogramme.
